Christmas Stars - Outstanding Quilting

Outstanding adjective: remaining items to be dealt with. =)

I started quilting Christmas Stars for a New Day in like week four of October. I’d guess the quilting is about half done. It’s now December 4 - there’s maybe still time to get it all done before Christmas, but I doubt it. Quilting on a Christmas quilt is fun for the holidays, but there are a lot of other fun things to do too…

Here’s the plan for the quilting I still need to do (the outstanding quilting) on Christmas Stars.

Feathered Star Central Medallion

Center Octagon - the red fireworks/underwater exotic plant/weird pet brush fabric needs something but I don’t have a clue yet. I don’t want to keep outlining all the way to the center

Half Square Triangle “Feathers” - they need something simple, maybe Harriet Hargrave curves from point to point

Holly Leaves and Berries - the green metallic outlining needs finishing

Dark Green Border - probably some scrollwork swirls around this inner border, in green thread, slightly lighter than the green fabric

Red and Tan Pinwheel Border

Red and Tan Pinwheels- the slightly modified 1/4” quilting works well in the tan, I may do something similar in the red or leave the red unquilted

Inner Border,Tan with Green Geometric Lines - scrollwork swirls in green thread, darker than the tan but lighter than the green geometric lines

Outer Border,Tan with Holly Leaves and Berries - scroll work swirls in bright red thread, a little dark but not too dark

Background Behind the Dots - the diamonds are ditch quilted but maybe the background needs a little more quilting, but nothing too attention-getting

Green Cross Border

Tan Background Behind Crosses - I need to outline the crosses in tan thread and maybe do something decorative in the um, … , armpits (?) of the crosses to fill the space… not pebbling but some fill that holds the background down and lets the cross stand out, without being too distracting… ???

Mottled Green and Christmas Ornament Outside Border - it’s getting scrollwork swirls in dark green thread

Holly Leaves and Berries Inside Border - it’s getting bright, medium red scrollwork swirls (see above)

Red Flying Geese Border

Red Geese - I’m thinking some star bursts in red metallic thread similar to the starbursts in the variable stars in the final border (see below)

Left Side Tan Triangles - they need the same 1/4” outlining like the right side

Mottled Green border and Red/Green/Gold Swirl Border - scroll work swirls in bright medium red on both sides of the red geese

Final Variable Star Border

Light Tan Left Side (inside) of Stars - no idea yet, maybe some 1/4” outlining with a little flair of some kind in light tan thread

Darker Tan Right Side (outside) of Stars - no idea yet, maybe some 1/4” outlining with a little flair of some kind in darker tan thread

Ruby and Gold Stars Final Border - it’s getting scrollwork swirls like the metallic on the green, red, and gold swirl inner border except it’ll be in dark red thread; and then the binding will be in dark red fabric

That’s the plan. Today anyway. We’ll see what I actually do when we get there…

Bowling

Last weekend the Senior/Super Senior doubles tournament in Phoenix went well. We didn’t make the stepladder finals but we bowled well enough to get a check. No bowling this weekend - I’m teaching a machine applique class tomorrow (Sunday).

Next Time

My Sunflower quilts needs its binding - next month it’ll be in the Tucson Quilters Guild annual show. I don’t want to wait until the last minute so maybe we’ll do binding now and I’ll ponder my planned outstanding Christmas Stars quilting for a bit longer. =)

Quilt your way!
