Couch Quilting and 300/800

Opps! Almost two weeks between blog posts - some stuff did get done in between…

Accomplishments

1. The binding is attached to Sunflower - a new photo would be boring…

Sunflower needs to be ready for the Tucson Quilters Guild show in January. I think I can hand stitch the binding while Eddie drives us to CA for the holidays. I’ll attach a sleeve and label when we get home. (Sunflower is in Quilts/Unfinished Projects)

2. We had a successful city trustee meeting regarding investments for the city’s self insurance trust fund.

Similarly, as you can imagine, a photo would be boring. =)

3. I learned to couch quilt with Razzle Dazzle thread!

Razzle Dazzle Couch Quilting

The thick, dark red, glittery thread on the inside border of the holly leaf triangle is couch quilted Razzle Dazzle - an 8 weight, 8 ply metallic thread by Superior and Ricky Tims.

Not wanting to quilt right up to the long edge of the holly leaf triangle (the seam allowances are pressed under the holly leaf fabric along the tan stars seam), I needed a way to end the green metallic outlining of the holly leaves. A defining edge with ordinary thread didn’t seem like it’d be enough and that Razzle Dazzle thread was calling to me from the holiday thread stash.

Keith’s Razzle Dazzle Couch Quilting steps:

  1. Quilted the edge-defining line with dark green 50 weight cotton thread in both top and bobbin.

  2. Holly leaves and berries were outline quilted with green metallic, ending at the edge-defining quilted line.

  3. Slowly quilted the edge-defining line with a couching foot on my machine, Razzle Dazzle threaded through the couching foot (spool laying on the quilt), red shiny 40 polyester on top, red 50 cotton in the bobbin.

  4. Quilted over the Razzle Dazzle again to tidy it up a bit with a slight zigzag (hand guided) using an open toe foot and the red shiny poly on top and cotton in the bobbin.

  5. Knot and bury threads. I needed a large needle to bury the Razzle Dazzle. And I don’t always knot and bury my starts and stops - this was a bit of learning too.

P.S. The back is a fluffy brushed cotton and it looks just fine… =)

4. The scrollwork swirls in one of the inner borders of Christmas Stars is turning out nicely.

5. My good friend Dwight Burns and I won the scratch doubles portion of Tucson’s Annual Senior Tournament!!!

And I shot a 300 game and 804 series!

For the award presentation (by Kari Snyder of Tucson Metro USBC), I made sure to wear a bowling shirt with one of my quilts on it. (Alien Eyes)

Our 4-person team also bowled well and I did well in singles, but in the handicap events we got killed by the other bowlers…

I’m thinking of using some of my bowling patches to label my quilts. ???

Next Time

This week looks easy… I’ll have more quilting on Christmas Stars to show next time.

There’s two bowling tournaments this coming weekend in Phoenix - a team tournament on Saturday and a doubles tournament on Sunday.

And soon I’m going to have to finish planning my new applique class - Mandala.

Quilt your way!
