I Usually Hate Solids

Until now

I dove into a new quilt. No continued quilting on old projects and no border work on the initial early 70’s wallpaper quilt - I started something new. Just because it was fun. And because I had a desire. Or two. Both also inspired by early 70’s wallpaper.

The First Start

These cascading circles are part of the first idea but the wallpaper idea below is the one I’m primarily working on right now.

(I’ll likely come back to these circles soon because they’re way too cool to put away for too long.)

Drawing of the yet unnamed 70’s wallpaper quilt

Google Docs has a drawing program where you can import photos into your drawing. And… you can crop your photos into circles!!!

Sooo… This drawing is going to look incredibly similar to the actual quilt top because the circles are circle-cropped photos of the actual fabric applique circles I created. And we have this local store that sells a lot of solids so I could get pretty close with the background colors.

Windowpane Circles

For now, I’m going to call the round applique shapes Windowpane Circles. I didn’t want any piecing to interfere with the look, so I appliquéd the small gold triangles to the yellow “L”, and appliquéd the yellow “L” to the green “L”, and then the green “L” to the black Pac-Man shape. And then turned the circle edge all the way around.

Using applique foundation to make the “L” shapes

Appliquéing Windowpane Circles to Backgrounds

I love those four-pointed curvy starburst sort of shapes. They look impossible - until you realize they’re just background squares…

The first four windowpane circles are appliqued to the background.

I don’t know why that brown looks so purple…

All 16 windowpane circles are appliquéd to the background.

Now it just needs the simple brown border.

And a decision about whether to stop here or keep going with another border…

Fun! Fun!! Fun!!!

Bowling

In early July I was in Las Vegas for the True Amateur Tour (not as amateur as it sounds) and for my team’s turn at the USBC’s Open Championships (Nationals). It was a good trip.

  • TAT - 4,000 entries from across the country (and out of the country). In my Senior Scratch division, I finished second - very good, but one game away from some big money.

  • Nationals - I this year they had close to 11,000 teams so more than 50,000 bowlers and 25,000 doubles pairs. We should cash in each event, but right now, we’re in 26th in doubles!!! Bowlers have been bowling since March and the last bowlers bowl this weekend so I have to wait a bit longer for final results.

Next Time

Border decisions should be made on the Windowpane Circles quilt (maybe it does have a name already). Perhaps I’ll start quilting on something…

No significant bowling coming up; instead, I get to teach applique each of the next four weekends. I already know I’ve got some wonderful students.

Quilt your way!
