Trunk Show Planning and TA Border

Trunk Show

Keith Dommer: Beginning to Middle is a trunk show I had a lot of fund doing in 2018 for the Saddlebrooke Friday Quilters. And Yea! the Tucson Quilters Guild is having me do it again this March.

Beginning to Middle shows the growth from a brand new quilter to a more broadly accomplished quilter. It hints at an open door to the future, although we don’t know what’s on the other side. And hopefully it encourages other quilters to take the next steps on their own quilting path.

Five new quilts have been added and a few of the earlier quilts have been removed. 23 quilts in 100 minutes - a little more than 4 minutes per quilt. This timing worked last time but I’m still trying to convince myself it’s reasonable and manageable…

It’s been both satisfying and a little scary revisiting my all of my quilts. For each presented quilt we’ll discuss:

  • when the quilt was made

  • any awards it won and whether it was published

  • the pattern or design inspiration

  • whether the quilt shows any creative evolution or change in direction

  • particular successes and/or interesting judges comments

  • anything else of interest, and

  • what I might do differently if I remade the quilt

People might still want to take handwritten notes, right?

Toronto Architecture Border

What can I say? Ever since I put the dark piping around the woven silver applique, I’ve been excited about this quilt! So excited I haven’t wanted to diminish it with a mediocre border. Now I’m working on it in earnest and I think it’s coming out okay.

Making the piping and basting the piping to the applique squares is enjoyable, but I’ll admit - it’s not my favorite thing to do.

How about those ugly, barf yellow-green fabrics? I’m so glad I’ve collected a wide assortment of interesting fabrics…

The concept is coming together - very similar to the inspiration stone work on the Toronto building.

  • I’m not sold yet on the dark green final border.

  • I think I’m putting a transition fabric between the tree trunks and the main background fabric.

  • Maybe the light and bright squares are too light and bright - I have to take care how many get used or they may pull too much attention away from the body of the quilt.

Bowling

Hadn’t bowled any pro tournaments since before Covid and I was a little rusty in Las Vegas last week.

The PBA NonChampions event - I finished in the middle of the field, not good enough for a check.

The PBA Member/NonMember doubles event - my partner held me up; we didn’t make the finals (my fault) but we got a check!

Now it’s Tucson’s big annual City Tournament time. I’m bowling Team, Doubles, and Singles this month and then City Masters next month.

Next Time

The Trunk Show is close to being ready to go. My April classes are all planned and ready to go. Maybe in the next few weeks I can actually finish the borders on Toronto Architecture. Of course, then I’ll freak out about the quilting…

Quilt your way!
