Scrap Petal Garden Commission

Opps! Three months with no posts - I got a commission that needed to be finished fast, there was lots of teaching and bowling, and hey, life happens…

So let’s go!

Scrap Petal Garden

The shop owner says to me: “I want a fun project for my customers to sew this fall. Here’s a pattern and some fabric - let’s see what you can do.”

I said yes.

The pattern is Scrap Petal Garden by Penni Domikis of Cabin in the Woods Quilters. The 8 background and 10 foreground fabrics are Tim Holtz’ Abandoned and Monochrome fabrics by Free Spirit. Beginning in December 2022, the pattern and a fabric kit will be available at The Quilters Market. And you can check my events to see when I might be teaching the class.

I’ll post a full picture of the entire quilt next time.

One Significant Modification

Penni’s pattern suggests 64 nine inch squares in an 8x8 random pattern that’s pleasing to your eye. But maybe the background values could be controlled a bit to create a subtle chevron pattern - accented by some brighter colored four patches.

And I didn’t put the background all together first

These are two of the sections I appliquéd onto before completely assembling the background.

Because I machine applique, the applique was much easier without having to manage the entire bulk of the background.

Peaches and Cream

Even though P.C. recently had several teeth extracted requiring some sutures inside his mouth, he was still very helpful while quilting Scrap Petal Garden.

Binding and Quilting

I wasn’t entirely sure of the quilting while quilting - I knew I loved some of the elements; but while binding Scrap Petal Garden, I fell in love with all of it.

Because I like the old-timey look and feel of a quilt with patina, I used a cotton batt that shrinks a bit. And yes, I have been washing my quilts before binding.

Bowling

17 tournaments since my last post. Here’s some highlights:

  • My team won the Annual Arizona State Senior Open this year!!!

  • Cashed in a regional PBA50 event in Las Vegas. (Finished 22nd out of 100 of the western states best senior pros.)

  • Finished in the top 8 in the SouthPoint Senior Shootout - one of the nation’s biggest non-pro scratch senior tournaments. SPSS is a series of four tournaments and I cashed in each one. I’ll take a top 8 finish against 170 of the nations best seniors any day. (BTW, in the main finals, I lost in the round of 8 toWalter Ray Williams, Jr. If you gotta lose to someone, it might as well be him.)

Next Time

For the holidays, I’ve started working on Christmas Stars for a New Day again!!! I’ll share some progress next time. And I’ll post some full pictures of the completed Scrap Petal Garden.

Quilt your way!
